Where is area code 206?
Washington's Utilities and Transportation Commission says 206 serves Seattle, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Mercer Island, Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island, northern Des Moines, and nearby communities. Since June 10, 2025, new numbers in the same region may receive the 564 overlay code. Existing 206 numbers did not change, and local calls require ten digits.

Does a 206 caller ID mean the caller is in Seattle?
No. A number can move with its subscriber, and caller ID can be spoofed. The FCC warns about “neighbor spoofing”, where a caller displays a familiar local area code or prefix to encourage an answer. A 206 display is therefore neither proof of a Seattle caller nor a scam verdict.

- Report unwanted calls and spoofing through the FCC complaint center; report fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
